During home visits, Tamarisk volunteer caregivers socialize, play cards and other games, share a movie or listen to music with the patient. They might prepare a light meal, run errands, shop for groceries, help with housekeeping tasks or read quietly to the patient while he or she rests. The companion’s day to day needs form the agenda.

At the same time, Tamarisk volunteers provide regularly-scheduled respite for caregivers within the family. For approximately 2–4 hours a week Tamarisk volunteers assure the safety and well-being of the patient while the family caregiver is away. “I felt very comfortable leaving my sick husband with a Tamarisk volunteer,” writes Bev, “Time away from care giving was much needed.”

Volunteer caregivers are required to be interviewed and complete 20 hours of training prior to volunteering. Tamarisk conducts reference and background checks on all volunteer caregivers. Volunteer caregivers must accept individuals’ mental and physical limitations, be dependable, possess good moral character, and be friendly and sympathetic to older adults.

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Caregiver for a Tamarisk family, visit our page on VolunteerMatch.org or fill out our Volunteer Application and contact us.

"The Tamarisk volunteer was an angel. My mom loved her and she is truly a friend to all of us. She was an answer to my prayers"
